I think that putting yourself in the shoes of the photographer, but also looking at an image long and hard and formulating an idea of what you see that photo to mean makes a good reader of images. Not only are you seeing the image through the eyes of the photographer, but you can also offer to new perspective to the image and allow people to see the image in a new light and with a new meaning.
