I think that a good, successful advertisement is one that sticks in your head. For me, this means bright colors and as simple an image as possible. Too often advertisements are so busy that it's easy to lose track of what is actually being advertised. One of the most successful advertisements, in my mind, is for OPI nail polish. They had a bottle of orange-ish nail polish inside a bell pepper of the same color with a simple peach background. I saw that ad years ago and for some reason I still remember it. I think it was because of the simpleness of it. It was more or less monochromatic and included an interesting metaphor and imagery.
