I believe good advertisements include a powerful message/ image and are overall simplistic. Black and white images or ads with complimentary colors catch the eye more succesfully in comparison to those crowded with colors and words. A single object on a plain background, or black and white photos of people using the product with a caption  is impactful. Writing or product descriptions that can be read at a glance also help sell item, as people usually do not take the time to thoroughly read a paragraph description. Those including easy to understand humor or wit also persuades the consumer into purchasing said product. Less successful ads include too much happening in one scene, inappropriate or hard to understand humor, or a lengthy description.

Successful

This advertisement has an impactful message in contrasting colors, catching the eye quickly. The text can be read at a glance, and yet the viewer still recalls what they've seen. The colorful image catches the eye, although the ad isn't "too much" with crowded text and colors.

Unsuccessful
In my opinion, this advertisement isn't successful in selling the product because the colors are very crowded, and the product name seems to get lost in the jumble of things happening in the background. Since the entire model's face is shown, at a glance, one cannot tell what the product featured is by glancing at the model's face. The lipstick gets lost in the pink tones in the background, and the reader will assume the text is too lengthy to read while seeing it on the street or quickly flipping through a magazine.
